"You must
be the change you wish to see in the world."
-Mahatma
Gandhi
Change is inevitable. Many people today are
interested in changing their life and the world around them for peace,
prosperity and sustainability. It's how we change, what prompts it, and
what we learn from it that is most important.
Gandhi said "You must be the change you want to see in the world", yet
many activists employ old methods of bringing about these changes -
monologues, fear tactics, economic hardship. This has created a big
charge around activists, sometime overpowering the good they are looking
to create. The result is often both sides feel like they have lost
rather than creating a win-win situation.
The forthcoming book "From Activist to Catalyst", discusses engaging in
dialogue with organizations as a stakeholder. This dialogue can pave the
way for a transition from a dominator model to a partnership model.
Gary is President of Evolutionary Ventures. Formerly CEO of Hazel Henderson's show "Ethical Markets",
which reached over 40 million households on PBS, which exemplifies these principles by highlighting what companies are
doing right, and how to provide the economic incentives for change.
