Treating the Cause or the Symptoms?
By Gary Tomchuk
Attending a recent event in Los Angeles was quite
enlightening in looking at approaches to dealing with the environmental
problems we are facing at this critical time on the planet. The event
was a presentation by venerable Thupten Ngodup, the Medium of Tibet's
Chief State Oracle and Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj, Head of the
Council of Elders of the Maya as well as Head of Indigenous Council of
the Americas, speaking about the environmental issues from the
perspective of their ancient wisdom and indigenous culture.
Don Alejandro spoke with the fierceness of a
warrior of how we must stop the contamination of the planet. He was
emphatic as he called for an end to the contamination of the water, air
and land. The people he represents are people of the land and are
suffering from the shifting weather patterns and pollution. His
emotional plea was a declaration to all present to do what they can to
make the changes needed to stop these problems.
In contrast, the Tibetan Oracle, Thupten Ngodup
spoke very softly and pulled you into his story of how people once
understood there was sufficient food for all as they all worked together
to harvest. But, one day someone put away some food to save for a later
time. Others seeing this started to put food in separate spaces for
themselves, building fences and walls to project theirs from others.
The monk spoke how it was this fear and separation that is the root of
the problems we now face, and called for compassion for all sentient
beings.
These wise masters represented the yin/yang of this
issue and its solution. In medical terminology we have an acute problem
that must be stabilized quickly by fierce, determined actions. We also
have a chronic issue that underlies these symptoms that must be
addressed through gentle compassion and love for ourselves and all
sentient beings. Through looking at issues holographically; physically,
mentally, emotionally and spiritually we can come together to create the
changes that will ensure our survival and thriving.
