Global Social Venture Competition
The Global Social Venture Competition is the largest and oldest student-led business plan competition providing mentoring, exposure, and prizes for social ventures from around the world. The GSVC is organized by the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley in partnership with Columbia Business School, London Business School, the Indian School of Business and the Yale School of Management. The competition is also supported by several Outreach Partners that include the University of Geneva (Switzerland), Thammasat University (Thailand), ESSEC Business School (France), and a consortium of business schools in Korea (Social Venture Competition Korea).
Since its inception in 1999, the GSVC has awarded more than a quarter of a million dollars to emerging social ventures and has introduced early-stage social venture entrepreneurs to the investment community. Nearly 25% of past GSVC entrants are now operating companies.
This year, the Grand Prize of $25,000, awarded to the plan that achieves the best blended value (high economic and social returns) went to:
First Place: MicroEnergy Credits Corporation (Columbia Business School)
Second Place: Bio Power Technology (Prasetiya Mulya Business School, Indonesia)
Third Place: BioVolt (MIT Sloan School of Management)
SIA: SMART (Thammasat University, Thailand)
Two Perspectives on the Environmental
Crisis
Attending a recent event in Los Angeles was quite
enlightening in looking at approaches to dealing with the environmental
problems we are facing at this critical time on the planet. The event
was a presentation by venerable Thupten Ngodup, the Medium of Tibet's
Chief State Oracle and Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj, Head of the
Council of Elders of the Maya as well as Head of Indigenous Council of
the Americas, speaking about the environmental issues from the
perspective of their ancient wisdom and indigenous culture.
